Spamalot

Attention all Chicagoans (and New Yorkers): I just got back from Spamalot, a musical adaptation of Monty Python's The Holy Grail. The show stars Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin and Hank Azaria as Lancelot. It's running in Chicago at the Shubert theater until January 23 before they open in Broadway on February 14th.

If you're like me, you look at the show's concept and immediately think "This is either going to be a great adaptation like The Producers or the biggest waste of talent since Mystery Men. Fortunately, it's absolutely incredible.

It's not a line-for-line copy of the movie, although most of the lines you know by heart are in there. They've updated a lot, and I'm not going to spoil it. Suffice it to say that John Cleese and Eric Idle have probably mulled over what they would change over the last thirty years, and any changes are (believe it or not) for the better. Python purists will love it.

Of course, they do manage to savage some completely deserving targets. Andrew Lloyd Webber's overwrought musical numbers take some especially vicious hits. So do critics and, to a lesser degree, homophobes.

Don't miss it, and this goes double for those of you in Chicago. They launched the Producers for its first few weeks here with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick before moving to New York. If you're one of those people who have been kicking yourself about missing the Producers, don't let it happen again.

And for those of you in New York, you've got a chance to get a jump on the good seats before it opens there on Valentine's day. Get cracking.
