End Red State Welfare

OK, the good parts first. I live in Chicago. I'm represented by Barack Obama, Dick Durbin, Rahm Emanuel, Richard Daley and Sara Feigenholtz. Note that their views match up well with mine, but not with Congress as a whole and our president.

Of course, not that the Republicans have been running the government, they have been siphoning money from my Blue State to the Red States, and whining about their tax burden. In fact, only 77 cents of my federal tax dollar stays in Illinois according to the TaxProf Blog. Meanwhile, the CTA is looking at stopping overnight service and I find out that Wyoming and Alaska both get more than twice as much per person for Homeland Security as New York, which has already been hit twice. The situation is so out of hand that even the right wing Heritage foundation, linked to usual suspects Richard Mellon Scaife and Steve Forbes felt the need to opine against this form of Red State Welfare. (If Scaife's name sounds familiar, it's because Teresa Heinz Kerry told one of his reporters to "shove it.")

Scholarly analysis of the Red State Welfare phenomenon is available at The Angry Bear and a good presentation of the evidence is at Stop Welfare. Of course, I prefer a good rant, and whoever wrote this replacement for Kerry's concession speech pretty much nailed it.

Here's the map of the welfare states from Uggabugga (the map on the site is larger.) Does that big block of red states in the west and deep south look kind of familiar?

Update: This dKos Diary has the 2003 Data. It's even worse.

It's enough to make this otherwise calm Yankee say Fuck the South!

Whenever you run across a conservative blog leave a negative message. Over the course of time this has got to begin to break their resolve. Pride goeth before a fall and some swift kicks in the ass don't hurt either.
